John W. Lawit, LLC has deep experience across a wide range of immigration law matters. Lead attorney John W. Lawit has been practicing immigration law exclusively since 1978.
Attorney Lawit originally began his practice in New Mexico. There, he built the biggest immigration law firm in the State while serving as chair of the Immigration Law Section of its State Bar Association.
He also served on the state’s Border Commission and was author and chief lobbyist for the New Mexico Immigration and Nationality Law Practice Act. This was the first immigration consumer protection law in the US.
Since relocating to Texas in 2013 and establishing an office in Irving, the team at John W. Lawit, LLC has helped address an unprecedented increase in the volume of complex immigration law cases. Lead attorney John W. Lawit also helped establish the Immigration Law Section of the Dallas Bar Association, in addition to dedicating his time to helping several internationally oriented community organizations in North Texas.
Mr. Lawit has been an adjunct professor of US Immigration Law at the University of New Mexico and at the Texas Tech School of Law. He has helped thousands of clients hailing from nearly every country around the world with issues ranging across the full spectrum of US immigration law.
John W. Lawit, LLC, is eager to provide local counsel for attorneys and law firms handling immigration cases in Dallas and the surrounding region. We understand that a high level of familiarity with complex case laws, court procedures, and evolving immigration policies has become a growing necessity.
We are available to support you with your case at the local level, whether that means providing information or making a physical appearance in court.
Some primary use cases that can be addressed through our Dallas immigration law coverage services include the following.
Unable to make a specific appearance? Need augmentation and support for your staff across a range of dates, or on a regular basis?
John W. Lawit, LLC can collaborate with your firm to support your attorneys and your clients through the ongoing demands of your caseload. We understand that time is limited, and attorneys are unable to physically be in two places at once — no matter how much we may wish this weren’t so!
Our firm also understands that the need to make a physical appearance can arise suddenly, or that sudden developments can affect our ability to make it to an appearance we had scheduled for months.
When surprises rear their head, our Dallas immigration law firm can cover you. An experienced immigration appearance counsel will appear in Immigration Court or at administrative hearings before USCIS and ICE, demonstrating your dedication to your clients while ensuring that their case isn’t delayed or affected by your inability to physically appear.
Your clients get the benefit of working with someone attentive, knowledgeable, person-centered, and highly motivated to leverage the full extent of their rights to advocate for the success of their case. You get the benefit of covering more cases, remaining attentive to client needs, and receiving deep knowledge built through decades of dedicated immigration law experience.
John W. Lawit, LLC, can provide co-counsel support if you, as an attorney, are experiencing any of the following challenges:
If you are unfamiliar with the Dallas Immigration Court or USCIS interviews in the Dallas area, what DHS and EOIR expect to see, and other matters related to the adjudication and enforcement of immigration law, you can leverage the local familiarity and relationships John W. Lawit, LLC has built over its 45 years of dedicated service. We are available to help support your case on the local level, whether you are an out-of-town firm, out-of-state, or simply lack the time and resources to manage the case yourself.
John W. Lawit, LLC offers many tangible benefits to attorneys and other legal service partners, including:
Today’s law firms are expected to be agile, deeply knowledgeable, and able to keep up with unexpected fluctuations and trends. In this current environment, practices are likely to employ appearance attorneys and other freelance legal services in order to respond to emerging client needs.
A study conducted by LexisNexis UK found that over a third of all United Kingdom law firms relied on short-term contract attorneys and freelancers.
Small and large-sized firms were roughly equally likely to solicit outside legal support, with over 30% of firms in each category reporting that they had done so. Medium-sized firms, however, were much more likely to rely on outside support, with 46% reporting that they had used freelancers and short-term contracts to increase their service capacity.
An overwhelming majority of firms of all sizes (64%) say that they contract out 20% or less of their client work. However, a remarkable 15% of firms say that they outsource 51%–100% of their total client work to outside sources!
While these numbers reflect trends across the pond, they are likely consistent with trends in the United States, where 16% of all freelancers are either lawyers or work in the legal field.
Demand for US immigration lawyer services is at an all-time high. Many attorneys are feeling overwhelmed by their caseloads as a result of a recent flood of rapid and aggressive policy changes.
Uncertainty around immigration policies and a sudden increase in the need for legal representation have triggered unprecedented legal activity in a field that was already known for its high volume of cases.
Law firms serving clients with unclear or shifting immigration status have to make more appearances, perform more case research, and work harder to reassure more clients that all hope is not lost. John W. Lawit, LLC, understands the pressures people face on all sides of the equation.
People who thought they were legally and safely working through the system are scrambling to remain in the U.S. Judges, attorneys, and immigrants are, likewise, struggling to stay above the ever-deepening water.
If you are in need of support, know that we understand your plight. We are here to help your firm and your clients in any way we can with local and remote DHS appearances. Under no circumstances are we trying to become lead counsel in any case where our assistance is needed.
The following questions and responses can help you understand the value proposition (and corresponding legal obligations) of relying upon our support for case coverage, hearing appearances, and other co-counsel services.
An appearance counsel generally offers services for a single hearing or a very limited engagement window.
Co-counsels typically provide necessary services on an ongoing temporary basis, as the supporting attorney for more complex cases.
Local counsel typically serve firms that are out-of-state or well outside the region where their client may require representation. They may also be unable to make an appearance or require knowledge that goes beyond their current skill set.
In immigration law, all three types of supporting services are common, and these terms may be used interchangeably to refer to relationships where an outside attorney covers client work on another firm’s behalf.
We prefer to work exclusively with attorneys and established law firms when offering local counsel services. All services are provided for a contracted fee that is agreed upon by both parties prior to the corresponding client work or engagement. The clients we are looking for are limited to attorneys and law firms.
Any time you are looking for support from a reputable AV-rated firm to assist you with appearances, John W. Lawit, LLC can be there for you. We provide our collaborating firms with extensive, up-to-date knowledge of immigration law and work with them to achieve their case goals.
We also have the ability to make specific court and USCIS appearances, bringing with us the passion that comes with 45 years of doing what you love.
