John W. Lawit Honored with Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award

We are proud to announce that our founder and senior attorney, John W. Lawit, has been presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who. The world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles. This prestigious recognition honors Mr. Lawit’s four decades of dedication to immigration law and his lasting impact on the communities he serves.

A Career Built on Advocacy

Since founding John W. Lawit LLC in 1979, Mr. Lawit has committed his career to helping individuals and families navigate the complexities of immigration and nationality law. His expertise has extended beyond private practice. He has served as an adjunct professor of immigration and nationality law at both Texas Tech University Law School and the University of New Mexico Law School, and was licensed as a foreign legal consultant by the Law Society of British Columbia.

Mr. Lawit earned his law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law in 1977 and is licensed to practice in both Texas and New Mexico. In 1985, he was selected as a United States immigration judge by the U.S. Department of Justice, and he authored the New Mexico Immigration and Nationality Law Practice Act in 1987.

A Deep Commitment to Community Service

Throughout his career, Mr. Lawit has demonstrated that the practice of immigration law is about more than legal expertise; it’s about serving people. He has been a volunteer attorney with the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas since 2013 and was a founding member of the Immigration Law Section of the Dallas Bar Association. Earlier in his career, he established an immigration program for Jewish Family Services of Albuquerque, served as a director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico, and led the New Mexico Refugee Association as president for five years.

Recognized Among the Best

Mr. Lawit’s accomplishments have earned him widespread recognition throughout his career. He has held the highest AV Rating through Martindale-Hubbell since 2000, been named one of the Best Lawyers in Texas since 2015, and was recognized as a Top Attorney in New Mexico. His humanitarian work has also been honored with awards, including the Millennium Friend of Children Award from Rainbow House International, the Distinguished Service Award in Immigration Law from Catholic Social Services of Albuquerque, and recognition as an Honorary Consulting Attorney by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs.

He has been profiled in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in American Law.
